It’s finally the end of my journey (or at least the curriculum)at Flatiron School. I could not be more happy with the outcome! When I began just a few months ago I was a complete novice. I had never even written a single line of code before starting the bootcamp prep work.

When the “The First Mile” (phase one) began it was off to the races! We were learning the basics of Ruby and the pace was extremely fast, also every thing we were learning was brand new to me. I have to admit was a bit overwhelming. Nothing made sense for a couple days until there was an “ah ha” moment! Thats the moment when you start to think like a programmer, also the time that programming becomes fun!

Right when I started to feel confident with Ruby we started learning routing with Sinatra and how to manage databases with Rake. Once again I felt like I knew nothing.. This was probably the most difficult part of the whole curriculum for me. There were so many new concepts. If I ever thought I was going to hang up my coding hat that was the time, but Im so happy I didn’t!

After painstakingly learning routing and databases with Sinatra we were introduced to Rails. Ruby on Rails was when everything I had learned up to that point started making total sense! Once again programming was fun! I woke up everyday eager to get on the computer and use what I’ve learned. I finally felt like I was a coder.

Javascript was so much fun for me. It took a but of a mindset change after Ruby, being that its syntax is a little different, but when you start to realize all the things you can do with javascript its addictive! I up all day and night learning and practicing.

Then came React and another big mindset shift. It took a while for me to get used to using React but once I did I was hooked (no pun intended).

I want to say thank you to Flatiron School. I have found something in coding that I didn’t expect, Its some thing that I truly love. Starting from where I did and seeing where I am today boggles my mind. I would never be able to learn this so quickly without the structure that this program gave me. The end of any journey is always a bit sad, but I’m looking forward to the next one!
